November 1999 marked the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Convention of the Rights of the Child.
However, children around the world are still being denied their basic rights such as the right to an education.
Your war, Our lives highlights the plight of children in countries around the world still being caught up in adult wars - maybe as child soldiers, maybe injured by landmines, maybe having to flee their homes.
Education work
Amnesty International has many activities that can be carried out in schools, and the Cambridge group has current and former teachers who are able to help with this. We can:
- help pupils put on an assembly for the rest of the school, to introduce the concept of human rights
- come in and talk with lunchtime groups or PSE/RE classes about human rights issues
- help with starting an Amnesty group in your school
- provide videos, games or exhibition materials to support human rights work on a numbe of topics.
These visits can leave something of lasting value to pupils - in some schools we have visited, students are now setting up and running their own Amnesty groups! Our group plans to continue its programme of school visits through the autumn - if you are an interested teacher or pupil, contact us here.
