At the centre of Cambridge City Amnesty International's work is simple letter writing. Our only way to communicate with governments and states that
have problems with Human Rights is to write to them. Our motto is: PROTECT THE HUMAN. Without these letters we do nothing of the sort.
Public awareness is crucial but without pen on paper it is all just noise.
Members individually write letters at home or in groups. A simple post card or one line letter is often enough. If you would like to write but are unsure how or what for then why not come along to our regular letter writing evening at the Alexandra Arms pub? The Alexandra Arms 22-24 Gwydir St Cambridge CB1 2LL provides a rather plendid atmosphere for members to sit and socialise whilst writing cards and letters for PoCs or individuals at risk. It just takes a little time and its a good evening out.
There are plenty of people willing to help you to write a polite but powerful letter to a governement getting across what you want to say. A kind word to a PoC can mean a great deal to someone who faces possibly years in prison. Afterwards the pub usually fills up and we join in the pub quiz. So why not make a night of it?
We usually (but not always) meet on the "Sunday following the second Thursday of the month" - i.e. the Sunday after our monthly group meetings. Check the events page to see if it is on this month. We arrive at 7:30pm and are usually done by pub quiz time (10pm).
